Retro vs. new: Pokémon

by Austin Nickols.

The eons-long battle fought between moviegoers, gamers and music junkies alike: Which is better? The nostalgic, classic beauty of the retro, or the sleek trendiness of the new? A prime example is Pokémon Yellow Version where you start out with Pikachu following you around. It was awesome, no matter how low resolution the graphics were. Back then the Pokémon designs were original; each Pokémon was like genius congealed into a beautiful pixel formation.  When Nintendo made Pokémon Coliseum and XD: Gale of Darkness for the GameCube, it was still original and provided Pokémon enthusiasts a new take on their beloved game. Even Platinum, Diamond and Pearl were just as amazing as the original. But sadly, it’s starting to look like the Pokémon Dynasty is soon to end. With the recent addition of Pokemon: White and Black to the empire, fans are afraid of Pokémon’s impending doom. The story line was basically left hung out to dry, the game flew by and it felt like the player could have reached the Elite Four blindfolded with his fingers cut off. Sure, the graphics are leaps and bounds ahead of the original games, but the Pokémon designs resemble something a five year old would cook up. Unless the enterprise does something drastic or puts that “Gotta Catch’em All” spirit back in its fans, it looks like Pokémon will become a fond childhood memory.
