If you’re into intense, creepy movies that stick with you after the credits roll, “”Iron Lung” might be one. The movie is based on the indie horror game created by David Szymanski, who also directed the film version. It’s a low budget sci-fi horror story, but, honestly, that’s part of what makes it so effective.
The movie stars Mark Fischback, or known as Markiplier, who is a well known YouTuber, who plays a prisoner sent on a mission to explore a mysterious ocean of blood on a distant moon. He has to do it inside a tiny submarine called the “Iron Lung,” and he can’t even see outside. Instead, he takes grainy pictures and tries to figure out what’s around him. Most of the movie takes place in this cramped space, which makes it feel super claustrophobic and stressful.
What makes Iron Lung different from a lot of other horror movies is that it doesn’t rely on constant jump scares. Instead, it builds suspense slowly. The audience feels just as trapped as the main character, and the sound design and darkness make everything more intense. There aren’t a ton of special effects, but the simple setting actually makes it scarier because your imagination fills in the gaps.
Lots of people had positive reactions, like senior Red Jonhson who watched the movie and played the game.
“It was a very great adaptation. It got a lot of the most major parts of Iron lung, including the story,” Johnson said.
These reactions show that both fans of the original game and new viewers appreciated how intense and true to the story the movie felt.
Another student, senior Madalyn McEuen, has also watched the movie.
“If you are a fan of psychological horror I would recommend it,” McEuen said.
Overall, Iron Lung shows that you don’t need a huge Hollywood budget to make a great horror movie. With a strong atmosphere and a unique concept, it proves that indie films can be just as powerful as big studio releases. If you like sci-fi and psychological horror, this movie is definitely worth watching.
