English Prog-Rock band “Muse” have managed to embody science, wonder and the unknown into 13 bold songs. A mixture of metal, disco, a bit of dubstep and anarchy is all held up with flamboyant orchestrations. As always, Muse knows what the fans like.
Muses signature style is ostentatious strings and orchestrations. Most of the time it has an epic effect, but on The 2nd Law, it almost is overpowering. Almost. The way the band rides the border of too much and absolute beauty has a great effect. Songs such as “Survivor,” (which was written for the 2012 Summer Olympics) and “The 2nd Law: Unsustainable” are perfect examples of such.
The emotion put into every song on this album is different. It’s a mixture of happiness, longing, anxiety, anger and love; every song on the album has its own emotion and message. Though the messages are not all interconnected, they blend into a relatable and interesting thought process.
Muse has always been known to portray a message for defying power and government, “Supremacy” and “Explorers” being blunt examples. The song undertones are usually thought provoking and obscure. All save for one song, “Madness” the bubbly beat and repetitive lyrics are similar to something a one-hit wonder would make. There is nothing dark and fascinating about it, it’s just catchy.
Overall, this album is perfect for rookies and die hard Musers.
