Ride of the week: ‘Mellow Yellow’

When he pulls into the school parking lot every morning, sophomore Dylan Gillespie gets a lot attention. That comes with the territory of driving a bright, yellow truck. Gillespie said his truck has fans, and he does get compliments from time to time, but his friends disagree with them.

“My friends don’t like that it’s yellow. They think it’s ugly,” Gillespie said. “Yellow is just a weird color for a truck.”

‘Mellow Yellow’ is a 1984 GMC Sierra Classic 1500 and Gillespie said that it gets 12 miles to the gallon. Complete with all of his updates, Gillespie said that the interior is the best part of his truck.

“The interior is black and yellow leather on a big bench seat,” he said.

He found the truck on Craig’s List last year and bought it from a man in Heber Springs. Gillespie and his friends have named his truck ‘Mellow Yellow’ after the color. Even though Gillespie liked the truck when he bought it, he said he never liked the paint.

“I really want to repaint it black. I think that would just look a lot better for a body color,” he said.

Despite the color, Gillespie said that he really enjoys driving his truck and the attention that comes with it. He has rebuilt the exhaust and worked hard to get his truck just the way he wants it.

“I got a new carpet put in, a new dash and I put in the stereo from my last truck,” Gillespie said.
