At any given moment, freshman Quinton Graves may transform from being a quiet, reserved student to one surprisingly good at beatboxing, a hobby he began in sixth grade.
“One day, I was sitting next to my friend in a computer class and we heard some music coming from the gym and I just started beatboxing to it,” Graves said. “At first, my friend thought it was a part of the music in the gym, but it was me.”
His cousin, senior Jordan Martin, testifies to his talent.
“He’s so good at it,” Martin said. “I don’t know if he sits at home and practices or what.”
Martin said Graves is fickle about using his talent. “He’s so quiet,” Martin said. “He doesn’t really do it around other people, but with [his close friends and family], he’ll start doing it out of nowhere.
Graves said he has thought about participating in competitions, but shyness keeps him quiet.
“Sometimes I do [want to compete], but I don’t know if I’d be any good,” Graves said.
So while he may someday be renowned for his interesting skill, for now, Graves has beatboxing simply as a hidden hobby.
