12 schools gather for Special Olympics

Each April, special education classes from Bryant, Collegeville, Davis, Hill Farm, Hurricane Creek, Salem and Springhill elementary, Bryant, Bethel, and Benton middle school and Benton and Bryant high school  participate in modified track and field events at the high school track.

The events include a parade with school participants school marching around the track holding their banner.  After the parade, one student runs one lap while carrying the Special Olympic Torch April 25.

“They [the Special Olympic participants] are so cheerful and excited,” junior Marissa Sides said.  Her sister participates in Special Olympics.  “They have something just for them.  It’s like their own pageant.”

Students participate in both indoor and outdoor events based on their abilities.

Indoor events include tennis ball and softball throws, on occasion, soccer.  Team runs and individual runs are held outside on the track.

Special Olympics are for the extent of the school day at the high school stadium.  Students not involved in clubs sponsoring Special Olympics or family of participants may not attend the events without permission from an administrator.
