30 band members selected for All-Region

On January 20th, 30 students from the Legacy band traveled to Benton to compete in All-Region against 14 schools from Saline and Pulaski County.

Retired band director Franklin Washburn assisted students by helping them practice All-Region music they received in October inside and outside of class.

“I put the word out that if they needed any help, I would listen to them privately to help them with their All-Region try-out material, because they’re going against other kids from other schools,” Washburn said.

Students who competed were judged on scales, sight-reading and how well they play their music. Students divided into two bands according to their scores. Students who received higher scores place in first band, while alternates and those who scored lower place in the second band.

Senior Hannah Rider competed for the first time at All-Region against two other contrabass clarinet players for a spot in first band.

“I was nervous, really nervous, because it was my first time going,” Rider said. “There’s not a lot of instruments of my kind, so I thought that I would possibly have a chance at getting first band, but there was never a full guarantee of me getting into first band.”

Rider was one of 12 band members who made first band. Students who make first band become eligible to attend All-State tryouts in Hot Springs Feb. 4.
