Softball girls win in fifth inning

by Ashton Eley.

Sophomore Kaley Coppock bats for a home run against Mt. Saint Mary.

Girls softball played Mt. Saint Mary Tuesday, March 27 and left the field with a 10-0 victory.

In the fifth inning sophomore Kaley Coppock ran her second home run, ending the game.

“Clark said the team aims for an undefeated season, and to meet this goal, the players have to focus on their own game.

“They have to play their own game no matter who they’re playing,” Clark said, “If we are worried about just about what the other team’s abilities are and not on our own strengths, our mindset is not where it needs to be.”

The girls play Van Buren, Tursday, March 29. While Clark does not think the Pointers are any tougher of a competitor than MSM, she is till concerned about the game.

“We never look past a team,” Clark said. “The next game is the one we have to win.”

Senior Payton Jenkins runs to base.

Senior Payton Jenkins, who threw a no-hitter against MSM, and Van Buren could be better than last year.

“They had a lot of young, inexperienced players last year,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said she felt she did all right in yesterday’s game, but really she is just getting back in the swing of things.

“I worked on several things,” Jenkins said. “I want to work on crisping my pitches for the tournament in Van Buren this weekend.”

Clark said the team improved in one key area that helped them to get points on the scoreboard quickly.

“This year, we have jumped on the pitchers’ first run,” Clark said. “That is what helped us get three home runs [against MSM].”

Jenkins said the team’s aggressive play comes from the more comfortable feel of the team.

“We are all more comfortable and confident,” Jenkins said, “not cocky, just confident.”
