Wilhelm Wubbena, a junior foreign exchange student from Germany, said he enjoys his time in America and relaxing by swimming for the Bryant High swim team.

“In Germany, swimming sports are only hobbies not a school sport,” Wubbena said.

As a not-team swimmer, he decided to take a big step and try it out here.

Washing away the stress of the day, Wubbena meets at the Bishop Park facility with the rest of his team and dominates the water in a relaxed manner. He says it’s competitive, but the team has a loosened vibe.

“There are good and bad swimmers, but it’s like everyone is equal here,” Wubbena said, “I’m not looking to be the best I just want to learn more about the sport and use it to my advantage to relax from stress of classes in a new country.”

Recently on the 25th at Hendrix University, Wubbena’s relay team completed the 200 yard relay in 1:46, the 200 yard freestyle in 1:38, while winning the 400 yard freestyle in only 3:39 sending home all of the other relay teams. He looks forward to ending his first season of swim with exhilarating excellence.

“I will enjoy this season and learn much,” says Wubbena “and [I’ll] for sure join the swim team when I go back to Germany.”
