Shuttleworth receives Paul Eells Award

Senior offensive lineman Ian Shuttleworth’s story of redemption is the ultimate testament to success in the community. As his high school career comes to a close, Shuttleworth reflected on his past struggles and how commitment with support from others led him to his achievements.

In March 2011, Shuttleworth was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer that targets the lymphatic system. Despite this setback, Shuttleworth knew he would be successful.

“I never gave up hope of what I was going to be,” he said. “I always kept the mentality that the only thing this is going to do is be like a block in the road, a temporary one. I knew we were getting over that and there’s bigger things to come.”

When Shuttleworth began his junior year, he embarked on a journey. A number of postseason athletic awards highlight his senior year, including First Team All-State and the Arkansas All-Stars. He performed exceptionally when he plays. But the fact that he played successfully on the field and battled cancer off the field is extraordinary. Yet Shuttleworth remains humble.

“I know it could be a lot worse right now,” he said. “I am truly blessed that I’ve made it this far.”

Shuttleworth received the Paul Eells Award Jan. 16 sponsored by KATV, Channel 7. The honor represents athletic performance, commitment and overcoming impossible odds. Of all the accolades Shuttleworth has received, this is his favorite award.

“It shows much more than just football,” Shuttleworth said. “Football’s only half of my story and half of what I’ve had to go through to achieve those other awards that I got.”

Besides his family, Shuttleworth’s biggest support comes from the community. He doesn’t forget the coaches, players and fans.

Shuttleworth said he learned from his story to never take advantage of the small things in life.

“Don’t let anything pass you up and seize the moment,” he said.

Shuttleworth intends to continue his football career into college on an athletic scholarship. His top choices thus far include Henderson State, Southern Arkansas University and Arkansas Tech.
