Ride of the week: ‘The Minion’

Band director, Keith Matthews and his minion.

Band director, Keith Matthews, drives a yellow Volkswagen bug parked right in front of the band building. At the beginning of the year he was driving a big truck, but not to long ago he made the drastic change to a bug.

So it’s not as manly as his truck, but it’s a hit with his family and kids.

“She loves that car,” Matthews said referring to his 5-year-old daughter. “Every time we get in it, she says I’ve got one thing to say. Yellow slug bug, no tag backs!”

They call it ‘the minion’, as in the little yellow minions from “Despicable Me”. It gets 45 miles to the gallon and has five-speed diesel. It’s his father in law’s car, but when he heard how good its gas mileage was, he decided he needed to borrow it.

“She [his daughter] wants a pink one.” Matthews said. “We will have that one when she turns 16 and she will paint it pink.”
