It can’t be denied. Compared to recent years, varsity football has had a rough season. It has struggled to maintain a winning record, now 2-1 in conference and 4-2 overall.
The weather alone has caused delays and rescheduling that has prevented the team from getting into a routine. Injuries have also plagued the team.
Although the team crushed JA Fair 35-14 Oct. 5, senior running back Jalen Bell, one of the team’s key players, received a concussion that has taken him out of play for now.
Head football coach Paul Calley said senior Tyree Reese, who normally is a key defensive player at middle linebacker, will come over to offense to help fill the gap.
Calley said many players would have to step up if the team hopes to win homecoming.
“Playing at home is going to be good for us,” he said. “But what concerns me the most is that we’ve had a lot of injuries this year. Secondaries are going to have to play well.”
In spite of their 1-2 conference record, Sheridan’s big win against Benton last week has the Jackets looking for another signature win and could be a threat, according to Calley.
“Sheridan always plays tough. It’s always been close,” Calley said. “But their recent big win has made from hungry for a victory.”
With a week of practice, Calley said he hopes the team can play consistent in all three phases.
“Since the Central game, we haven’t played a complete game,” Calley said. “Our best shot is to limit their time on offense and stop the big play.”
The homecoming game starts at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 with preliminary activities beginning at 6:20 p.m. There will be a firework display after the game.
