On Feb 14 of this year, Marvel Studios released Captain America: Brave New World, the fourth installment to the Captain America franchise and the 35th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, the film grossed 88.5 million in the box office opening weekend and scored a 50% with critics, yet an 80% with fans.
The film follows the new Captain America, Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) as he tries to uncover the attempted assassination of President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, all while President Ross tries to maintain relations with the other countries of the world.
Five months after being elected, President Ross calls together a meeting at the White House to reveal his plan to distribute “adamantium”, the world’s new strongest substance, across different countries via a treaty. The adamantium is mined away from Celestial Island, a giant stone creature in the Indian Ocean that first appeared in the 2021 movie “Eternals.” After the big reveal, multiple agents in the White House turn against Ross and attempt to assassinate him, as well as Issiah Bradley, played by Carl Lumbly.
After the arrest of Issiah, Sam Wilson is convinced it was a set up, and goes off the grid to find out what happened alongside the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres, played by Danny Ramirez.
The movie was better than expectations. Over the last few years, Marvel hasn’t been very consistent with the quality of their films, so it was a nice surprise to get a movie of this caliber. The visual effects were spectacular, the plot was great, and the acting was on point. But that doesn’t go to say the movie didn’t have any flaws.
There were certain areas of the movie where the CGI could have had a little bit more effort put into it, specifically where President Ross is transformed into the Red Hulk in front of the White House, and a few areas in the beginning where Captain America is showcasing his gear. Another flaw was how the Red Hulk was advertised as a way bigger element of the film, but in reality he didn’t even show up until the very end of the film, but the fight scenes make up for it.
This was a very enjoyable film and a great watch despite a few issues that can be easily overlooked.
