At the top of the morning announcements, there is a list of teachers that changes every day. The purpose of this list, called Hornet Heroes, is to commemorate teachers who has done something to help a students or other staff members.

Testing Coordinator Evelyn Butler came up with this idea that would benefit the students, teachers, and the school.

“We get so busy and teachers are not praised for what they do every day,” Butler said. “I wanted them to be recognized for the little things they do.”

Butler researched positive reinforcement and came up with this solution.

“Research says that people will work harder for a positive reinforcement,” Butler said. “Not that we want them to work harder, but we want the teachers to know that they are appreciated and it’s kind of a personal challenge to me to create more magic, because if you just take that time little bit at a time it builds. It gives you a boost, saying ‘I got this,’ and it will get easier.”

Oral Communications teacher Paula Barker thinks Hornet Heroes is beneficial to the school.

“I think when students see adults reaching out and complimenting each other, hopefully it will [have an effect] and they will know that saying each word doesn’t cost anything and it will make someone’s day,” Barker said.

Dealing with the stress of teaching can sometimes be difficult, but if they see their name on the announcements accompanied by a nice compliment, it will give them a boost of confidence.

“I think teachers need motivation,  [and] I think it’s a great way for teachers to reach out quickly and give each other a shout out,” Barker said.

Sophomore Carlee Hutchins says that she loves Hornet Heroes.

“It’s a really good opportunity for our teachers to show how much we appreciate them, because we don’t do it as often,” Hutchins said. “But, they do so much for us, so it’s like a praise for them.”

A Hornet Hero has many qualities. Butler has outlined a few things she looks for in a Hornet Hero.

“Someone who cares,” Butler said. “A person who puts a student first. That’s why we are here, going over and above to make sure the student [succeeds].”
