    Topping the Charts

Madeline Colclasure photo.A bright screen illuminates the faces of students no matter where they are. For some it is social media, sending tweets and scrolling through photos, but for others it is games challenging their mental and strategic abilities.

Since the owner of Flappy Bird took it off of the App Store, new games have filled the top spots on the charts.

The newest No. 1 game on the App Store is Clash of the Clans. The interactive game involves time strategy by attacking other player’s clans while still building the strength of your own clan.

Between baseball practices and school, sophomore Alex Shurtleff makes time for Clash of the Clans.

“I play Clash of the Clans because you can interact with real people within the game,” Shurtleff said. “You can team up and attack each other to see who has the tougher clan. For some people it gets very competitive, but for me it’s just addictive and fun.”

Interactive games have stolen the Top 3 on the App Store, but none have globalized quite like Quiz Up.

Quiz Up is the newly released trivia game, allowing players to connect worldwide to test their knowledge on subjects from media to bones.

Sophomore Alexis Lorio said she uses Quiz Up as a stress reliever in her busy schedule.

“I heard about QuizUp from an ad on Youtube,” Lorio said. “I like it because I can have mini trivia matches about the things I love, like Disney. It has almost every possible topic, so you can test your knowledge on everything. You get to see how much, or how little, you and your friends know about things by challenging them.”

Testing you brain’s ability is not only present through trivia, but also through puzzles.

The top puzzle game on the App Store is Candy Crush, a long running game that is still dominant on student’s phones and tablets. By moving the candy around obstacles and meeting requirements, Candy Crush makes for an addicting yet challenging app.

Sophomore Drew Carnahan considers Candy Crush an app worth buying if you are ready for the challenge.

“First of all, it’s very addicting,” Carnahan said. “It’s an interesting puzzle to try and figure out, which is harder with only 5 lives. It’s cool, yet embarrassing, to say I’m on level 211.”
