On Instagram, there’s more likely than not to be a filtered photo of a girl with long hair and jeans dyed in pastel colors. Old cameras, whimsy makeup and a touch of Starbuck’s coffee make up the props; you’re witness to a trend Renaissance, the return of vintage clothing.
Leaders of this Renaissance, hipsters, embrace the underground. Ironically, while they despise the mainstream, their culture has become popular among teens and young adults. Hipsters are fond of oversized sweaters, cream-tinted lace, and black Oxfords; they congregate on Instagram and Tumblr, enjoy inspirational quotes captioned on unrelated photos, and indulge in music no one’s heard. If you fall under any of these categories, you’re probably reading this through thick-framed glasses. Never fear though, as the hipster culture has risen in popularity, the stigma involved has decreased (much to veteran hipster’s chagrin).
Spending $80 on each article of clothing can drain funds; luckily there’s an optional route to take. While Goodwill may only have grandma clothes and oversized pants, you’d be surprised how many diamonds in the rough meet hipster requirements. Forever 21 also have its share of vintage fashion, for a bit higher price. Whether you’re looking for a popular fashion, or interested in vintage clothing, the hipster style might be right for you.
