Student Senate Preparations for 2015 Homecoming

Homecoming is fast approaching, and Student Senate is making preparations for the dance, spirit week, and the daytime assembly. With the class separated into two periods, the organization is having to efficiently divide the work and effort.

Committees include day time, night time, spirit week, and publicity. Student Senate Reporter/Historian Alexis Lorio is in charge of the spirit week committee. She worked closely with fellow officers to come up with this year’s theme.

“[The officers] met every single day in class and just debated what we thought would be good days,” Lorio said.

After themes were decided, it was Student Senate’s responsibility to advertise and bring up the hype for this year’s theme.

“We made about 30 posters, and we came up with some super fun games to play during the lunches,” Lorio said.

Student Senate has been instructed to be the face of spirit week by going all out.

The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Twilight in Tokyo,” so the painting and preparation is taking a lot of time because the prop is more elaborate than in previous years. Student Senate members had to paint over the old decor, then sketch what they wanted everything to look like.student_sen_painting20151019_ap_0113

“We’ve been working on it for almost two weeks now,” Lorio said.  “It’s very intricate and time consuming.”

The centerpiece for the homecoming pep rally this year is a Torii gate, a large structure featured in Japanese gardens.

“The centerpiece is definitely not as difficult to paint, but it’s ginormous, so it’s taking a lot of manpower to finish,” Lorio said.

The decor will feature cherry blossoms on the Torii gate for the Homecoming maids to walk through in the ceremonies.

“I think the prop that is going on the field this year is more beautiful than it has ever been,” Lorio said.  “It’s very natural, so all eyes will be on the maids.”
