Job of the week: Paul Tierney

After passing Edward’s Food Giant everyday on the way to school, senior Paul Tierney decided after his 16 birthday it would be where he applied for his first job.

“A grocery store was where I wanted to work for my first job,” Tierney said.

He said he wanted to work at a grocery store because he said he thought it would be a relaxed and easy job. During football season, he works 15-25 hours, while after the season is over, he works up to 30 hours, getting paid $8.15 an hour.

Tierney works in the dairy department of the grocery store, where he stocks all the dairy products, including milk, cheeses and yogurt.

“I also help wherever they need it. I’ll be a cashier; I’ll bag; I’ll help stock grocery,” Tierney said.

He has worked there for one year and 10 months. He said he enjoys some of his coworkers and the relaxed environment, though sometimes it can be difficult dealing with unhappy customers.

“They ask for something, and then I have to tell them that we don’t have it, and they get mad. They ask me, ‘Why?’ and I’m just like, ‘We don’t have it. I don’t know how to explain that we don’t have it,’” Tierney said.

Though he said it’s relaxed and easy, it can be interesting at times.

“One day a lady brought a huge dog into work while she was shopping,” Tierney said. “I was walking down the aisle and I saw this huge fluffy dog. I wasn’t with her the whole time, but me and Jordan went up and started talking to her and petting the dog. Nothing special.”
