It was one the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Staged or not, watching Queen Latifah marry a number of same-sex and opposite-sex couples as the song “Same Love” by Macklemore played brought tears of joy to my eyes. I was witnessing a growth in the world as I knew it, and finally it seemed as if thing were truly changing. The first same-sex marriage I witnessed.
Some questioned the event and the validity of Queen Latifah’s ordainment. Speculations surfaced that tried to falsify the legalization of the event. Some have even said that there was no need for such actions, and that it was somewhat irritating to see the marriages on such a popular event.
But, I can say that Queen Latifah was absolutely and legally ordained, and that all of those marriages were the real deal. The decision to show support for legalized same-sex marriages at one of the biggest events of the year is proof of the affects of change.
Same-sex marriage has been a difficult and controversial topic for the United States since the beginning of the country, specially in the “Bible-Belt” area of the South. Frowned upon by various religious groups (usually those from the Christian area), it is a topic of taboo. And for some, the legalization of same-sex marriage is a sign of the end of days.
Marriage outside the barrier of a man and a woman is sin in my house. Since I believe marriage isn’t between a gender and a gender, my parents and I disagreed on how to react to the Grammy’s decision. Like the popular lyrics that have become a sort of anthem to me, “Whatever God you believe in, we come from the same one, strip away the fear, underneath it’s all the same love,” I try to make sure my personality reflects how I feel.
