As theaters opened their doors Nov. 21, they also raked in record amounts for the second movie in a famous trilogy. “Catching Fire” made its debut Nov. 21, obtaining a gross amount of $1.61 billion.
The movie captured the essence of the book series about a teenage girl, Katniss Everdeen, who stared death in the eye to save her sister, Prim, from going into the arena of a televised death match known as The Hunger Games. As Katniss navigated the arena, she was under pressure from President Snow to convince the districts within the country of Panem of her rebellion led by love for her fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark.
To those who read the books, the movie misses important parts. I am on my third read of the series, and I agree some plot points make me wonder why the directors left them out. I understand that directors choose to exclude certain scenes because they don’t contribute to the overall plot of the movie.
Missed scenes include rebels who discuss the existence of a thirteenth district and an injury Ms. Everdeen receives. These plot points are sacrificed for one reason: the emotional connection form between characters, bring light to portray the chemistry.
Nevertheless, having read the trilogy, I longed for those parts that would’ve pulled together the theme for those who didn’t read the books. Without Katniss’ escape into the woods or Peeta’s ban on alcohol for Haymitch and Katniss, the audience easily missed the spark of rebellion that is showcased in the film.
Despite the neglected points of the book, the emotions of the characters were evident as the audience stepped into the arena with Katniss Everdeen. If you wonder which film to spend your money on next, “Catching Fire” would be your best bet.
