Purchasing a formal outfit is the first step before going to homecoming Saturday night.
Girls will wear dresses of all different colors and styles to fit their personalities. Buttoned dress shirts and slacks will be available for boys. It is a good idea to purchase these items before the week of the dance, but for those who haven’t, don’t panic.
Several stores in town will have these items. Kohls and JC Penney’s have a large variety of formal wear for both boys and girls. Some may not want to buy an expensive outfit for just one night. Evolution Resale, Goodwill and Key Elements sell gently used dress wear for inexpensive prices.
Accessories are important to go along with every outfit at homecoming. Girls should stick with white, sparkling jewelry to make their dress flow. Boys, a tie is all you will need to make the outfit complete.
While picking the right jewelry to match a dress, consider the style of it. If it is a lower cut, sleeveless dress, a small necklace is usually the only time it can be properly worn. Remember to stick with small, not flashy and pick a perfect, small width of diamonds. With all types of jewelry, stick with either white or an absence color in the dress that isn’t the main color. For all other types of dresses earrings, bracelets and rings are acceptable. Don’t put all of them together. If you have bigger earrings, choose a small ring that matches them. If your earrings are tiny, such as studs, a bracelet would be a perfect idea.
Boys, if you have a homecoming date, ties are more important than you might think. Always go with a solid color that matches the main color of her dress. Black slacks, dress shoes and a button up shirt are what boys wear. If you don’t have a date, pick any color tie you would like.
Sophomore Drew Brown said he stresses about his homecoming outfit.
“I haven’t even got my stuff for homecoming, but I think I’m just going to go laid back in khaki pants, a polo and a tie,” Brown said.
Homecoming night is all about planning. Figure out what time you will have a hair appointment Saturday morning and where you will be eating and taking pictures before the dance.
“I’m getting my friend’s mom to curl my hair,” junior Haley Holliman said. “I think people should only spend a lot of money on getting their hair done for prom. I’m excited I don’t have to spend any money and plus I know it will look great.”
Wild Ivy Salon, Escape Salon, Bryant Hair Studio and others can provide haircuts and styling before your night out. Curls, hair spray and lots of bobby pins are a must when it comes to homecoming hairstyles. Boys, have a clean shave and get a trim to make you look extra sharp before you hit the dance floor.
“I think guys should be groomed well for homecoming to reflect his effort that his date puts worth. Girls work really hard to look good for their boyfriends, especially at homecoming,” senior Marcus Griffin said. “I got my hair cut in advance at the mall, the barber did a great job.”
After you get dressed up, get the camera out so you capture your night out before it ends. Taking pictures alone, with your date or friends can always be fun. Pick a place with a nice background to make it look even better once they’re printed. The Court House, Old Mill or simply a friend’s house will work. Remember to plan a time to arrive and leave in order to finish dinner.
Freshman Casey Blankenship can’t wait to throw her dress on and smile for the camera.
“A group of friends and I are going to the Old Mill around 5-ish to take pictures,” Blankenship said. “It’s my first year going so I’m pretty excited.”
If you have a large group of friends, make reservations for dinner. Several local restaurants are great places to dine in before 8 pm. Don’t stress about eating at higher end restaurant, but focus on having a good time.
