Senior Michael Berkshire set the school track record for the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.13 a record that has stood for 18 years, senior Spencer Sullivan ran the hurdles with a time of 39.42 on March 13.
“I loved the looks on my mom’s face, and everybody congratulating me. It was dream-like,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan said he has mixed feelings about his senior year.
“I like being in high school. It’s fun and easy going, but at the same time I can’t wait for college, to be on my own and see what kind of possible career paths I am going to pursue,” Sullivan said.
He plans to go to college as a systems engineer at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, and is also thinking of possibly becoming a medical engineer, which consists of designing prosthetic limbs or designing artificial hearts.
Sullivan said he wants to tryout as a walk-on to the track team at the University of Arkansas.
The highlight of his senior year was when he broke the record. Ironically, he said that he was on the brink of quitting the track team in his sophomore year because he wasn’t fast enough. But he said he persisted. Then after two years of getting better, he beat the record.
Sullivan said that track taught him to never give up and how to be a team player.
“I love the challenge of track, and it’s something I’ve always loved doing,” Sullivan said. “It’s a goal-based sport, you pick a goal and you go for it.”
