Keeping up with style is something every teen does. The newest fashion hype among girls is making your own clothes.
Sophomore Sarah Shepard makes her own clothing and accessories by knitting using two needles or a loom as a hobby
Shepard makes things from hats and scarves to leg warmers and boot toppers.
“I love the look on peoples’ faces when I give them something I knitted,” Shepard said. “They seem to be truly thankful.”
Shepard learned to knit from someone she looks up to and said that is her inspiration to make things for herself and for others.
“My friend Audra in Memphis taught me to knit,” Shepard said. “She is my role model so that is pretty much my inspiration.”
Shepard said making her own clothes and accessories definitely saves her money.
“It really does save money,” Shepard said. “Needles are extremely cheap, about two dollars at Wal-Mart, and are a one-time purchase. Yarn costs about three dollars a roll. Buying a scarf or a hat can easily cost ten to twenty five dollars.
Shepard said she will continue to knit things for herself and her friends. She is doing something she enjoys, performing a good deed, and keeping up with the latest fashion all at once.
