JROTC Drill, Marksmanship and Physical training teams competed at the annual JROTC meet in Malvern, Arkansas on Jan 18. JROTC teams competed against JROTC teams from several schools across the state.
“I love drill. I’m ready to compete,” Sophomore, Harmony Taravella, Technical Sergeant (E6) personnel NCO and drill team member.
JROTC is divided into eight different teams. Within these teams, they train for different competitions.
The Drill team trains in military drills, which are used in the modern military to enhance discipline, though they were much more common long ago when soldiers would march into battle.
“They did amazing following all my movements, doing the best they could, even though they were really nervous and they were listening to me really well,” senior Victoria Filiatreau, drill commander, said.
The Physical training team, (PT) participates in training exercises that push them to their physical limits. They work not just to grow stronger physically, but to develop mental resolve and discipline.
“It’s always fun to do the Malvern comp for PT; it creates a strong team bond that will carry over into our future competitions,” PT captain, Senior, Nicolas Suarez said. “I feel confident in our male and female teams, we had a strong athletic presence with cadets this year.”.
The Color Guard team presents the nation’s flag and colors during school events to demonstrate dedication and respect for our country.
“Due to All regions in the band, we were only able to bring one Co-Ed team, which was mainly our backup team,” Said, senior, Marian Budu, captain of the Color Guard team, said. “When it came to the awards, our backup Co-Ed was able to place 2nd in the Color Guard Co-Ed category out of 10 or 11 teams that were at the competition, which surprised all of us.”
The Raider team participates in various physical and mental challenges that push them to not only their physical limits but their mental limits as well. They do exercises and challenges to prepare them for future military service and to help develop mental skills and strength.
The Marksmanship team trains in the use of firearms and how to use them responsibly, safely and accurately.
The Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB), similar to the Quiz Bowl, includes all the subjects the Quiz Bowl focuses on, as well as military knowledge.
The female PT team and the color guard team won trophies. Even though not all the teams won a trophy, all of the JROTC teams participating in the competition engaged in rigorous training to prepare for this competition.
