Students from Melanie Kiker’s Pre-AP Biology classes participate in a yearly science fair. This year’s fair will be held in the building 10 multipurpose room Feb. 2-3.

Kiker’s students first researched a topic that they liked. Kiker’s favorite part is seeing how students topics match their personalities.

“You get to see the students personalities in their topic selections, which I don’t get to see [often] when we’re dealing with all the standards we do in class,” Kiker said.

Next, students perform experiments and create a paper and board to show the results of their projects.

“[If they win] they get a ribbon, and we do an award-type ceremony in the multipurpose room,” Kiker said. “Then they get to go to regionals at [University of Arkansas at Little Rock] and represent our school March 4, and [then the University of Central Arkansas] in the spring if [they place] in regionals.”

Science fair projects can be in any category, from growing soybeans to testing how copper concentration in the water can effect a water flea. Kiker said judges will look for unique, creative science fair boards.
