From crafting love stories to aiding students in passing history class, John Green has become a sensation to teens.
Green is an author whose books have hit the big screen. Green is not only known in the world of literature, but he also stars in two YouTube series, “VlogBrothers” and “Crash Course.”
Every AP World History student understands the importance of John Green through “Crash Course.” It is a series of videos that cover different subjects such as history, psychology, and science.
“It definitely has helped me out on tests,” sophomore Maddie Miller said. “I think it helps all of us in that class. It helps us to understand better.”
In these AP World History videos, Green gives an in-depth overview of each chapter.
“Our book doesn’t give a clear representation of what it was like in those times,” Miller said. “[Crash course] really helps me understand the [culture], the society, and all its empires. It gives me a good general knowledge of how things happen and occurred in the different time periods.”
AP World History teachers Julie Dorsey and Will Heatherly also incorporate his videos into their teaching.
While some may only know Green for his “Crash Course” videos, he is a major author in the world of literature. Green’s most well-known books that have become motion pictures are “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Paper Towns.” Green focuses on the young adult audience, which appeals to students.
“When you’re reading, you don’t feel like you’re reading a young adult novel. It’s like you’re just reading a novel, and you feel more mature about it,” junior Sarah Brady said.
Green adds sophistication to the teenage life. He allows teens to feel less immature and confused but rather like people who are going through situations that will shape them as people and allow them to gain life experience. Green creates characters whom teens aspire to be like.
“With movies like ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ and ‘Paper Towns,’ [teens have] become more adventurous, and they want to be more like the characters in those movies and books,” Miller said.
Green not only develops inspirational characters in his stories; he crafts a relationship between the characters and the audience.
“[‘Looking For Alaska’] is so different from my life; it was weird that you can still connect to it,” Brady said.
Through his books, movies, and videos, John Green is an inspiration to teens. Young adults find connections through his characters and the way he emphasizes value in the teenage years.
“He’s always looking for something to do, like better the world for education,” Brady said. “I think that has inspired me to do the same.”
