“Beautiful Creatures” by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, one of my all-time favorite books. So obviously I was excited when Alcon Entertainment announced a film adaptation. Armed with tickets and popcorn, my mom and I walked excitedly into the theater.
Two hours later, we walked out of Tinseltown with nothing other than pure shock shrouding all other features. That adaptation was simply bad. Important characters were left out, scenes important to the development of the plot were left out and don’t even get me started on the awful accents.
This isn’t the only case where a book was butchered by the film industry. Year after year Hollywood produces what they think are quality book adaptations, and the reality is that so many of them are just bad. That’s not to say that all book to film adaptations are bad, some are actually really good.
Take Harper Lee’s, “To Kill A Mockingbird,” as another example. As a script, the movie was genius, but that doesn’t hide the fact that good, quality scenes were left out. Such as the one where Boo Radley puts a blanket over Scout as she watches Miss Maudie’s house burn down.
No matter the faults, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is still one of my favorite movies and books.
But how long does this have to go on before the movie industry realizes that they just aren’t doing a good job?
I acknowledge the effort involved in these movies, but at the same time, the effort is minimal. For me, it’s getting to the point where I don’t even want to watch movie adaptations anymore.
I don’t want anyone to think that I hate movie adaptations by any means, because to be honest, “Harry Potter” is my favorite book and movie series ever.
But next time you go see a movie based off of a book you love, be careful. Be very careful.

This is so true. Hollywood doesn’t realize how carefully we read and pay attention to details in a book and compare it to their so called “book to movie” adaptation.
