The cafeteria will offer sack lunches starting March 6 for $2.70.
“We are doing the sack lunches because of the volleyball games and we are trying to give kids another option so they can still eat. So they can come in and grab them if they want to eat outside or go to the volleyball game,” manager Tabatha Burton said.
The lunches will vary, but the same requirements for the tray lunches will be followed for the sack lunches. This means students will still be required to have a fruit of their choice and a milk and juice.
For students who are vegetarians or have any other special diet, the sack lunches will contain the same thing for everyone.
“Unless there is a doctors’ excuse, we don’t do any special diet for lunches,” Burton said.
The sack lunches will cost the same price as the regular lunch, and if the student usually gets a free lunch then that will also remain the same. If a student wants both a hot tray and a sack lunch it will still cost the price of two separate trays.
“Depending on how well this goes we might keep doing the sack lunch even after the volleyball stuff done. Our main goal is to keep our numbers up and to keep kids eating so if this gets more kids to eat we’ll continue to do it,” Burton said.
Numbers have shown that there has been a dramatic decrease in the amount of kids eating lunch. Nutrition charts have shown the percentage people need to eat to get their nutrients for that day. The cafeteria is required to follow this chart by law.
“Every time a student puts in their four digit number into the computer, it adds up how many kids eat a day. Our numbers vary. They’ve been down lately to around 240, but sometimes they’re as high as 420. So we are trying to get those numbers back up.”
