The local Mabel Boswell Library hosts many free events for students to attend every month. The events teens can attend are the Teen Advisory Board, Creative Outlet, Game On and a creative writing class. No requirements are needed to attend the events except, participants must be 13 to18 years old.
Teen Advisory Board, T.A.B, is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. This event gives teens an opportunity to select books for the library by reading summaries of books and writing if the library should purchase the book. During T.A.B, participants also play games, like Mafia or Minute to Win it, make crafts and have a snack.
Creative Outlet, a craft program for teens, runs from 4 to 5 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Previous projects were creating pillows, friendship bracelets and Sharpie tie-dye T-shirts. The library plans on making crayon canvases in the spring.
Game On falls on the third Monday of the month from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for ages 8-18. During Game On, students can snack, socialize and play board, card and video games. For video games, both a Wii and Xbox are available for students to play.
Along with these events, the library hosts a creative writing class twice a month. The class meets on the same weeks as T.A.B. and Creative Outlet. The class, open for 13-years-old and up, allows participants to share writing and partake in writing exercises. The next creative writing class with be Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.
Em Williams, sophomore, attends T.A.B., Game On and Creative Outlet.
“I like Creative Outlet the most,” Williams said. “The library’s programs are an excellent excuse to express my creative liberty. The library is a safe and nurturing environment. I know that all my friends and I will be safe, thanks to the close distance to school and police in the parking lot. My friends and I can walk over to the library, meet up to study or hand out in less than an hour.”
