The wrestling team posted its strongest ever finish at the 6-A 7-A state competition by finishing sixth this past weekend.
“This was the by far the teams best performance in four years,” volunteer coach Kel Denker said “the guys just did an outstanding job.”
Senior O’Dell Lee finished his high school wrestling career by capturing his second consecutive state title and extending his win streak to 47.
“He [Lee] preformed exceptionally at the tournament,” Denker said “he proved that nobody in the state at his weight class could stay with him and that he is ready for the colligate level.”
The wrestling team had six top five placers, another best for the team. Senior Brandon Powell finished second in the 120-pound weight class, losing 2-0 in the title match. Juniors Brett Blend, Zach Simmons, and Levi Brady all finished fourth in the 145-lb, 132-lb, and 170-lb weight classes. Junior Connor Goshien finished fifth in the 160-lb weight class.
Brady attributes part of the team’s success to its change of attitude this year.
“We head are heads right this year, we were a lot more focused,” Brady said “instead of just wanting to show up we wanted to win.”
Although the team will be losing its two top placers from the state tournament, it still has a bright future. With four juniors who placed in the top five returning the team has the potential to be successful again next season.
