Two-dozen seniors chatter and swarm around the stage of Love Auditorium to rehearse. Director Rachel Arrington sits at the front of the stage directing songs for the cast with her left hand while slapping her palm against her right thigh.
Arrington’s second block stage management has been preparing for their annual senior musical, “Bye Bye Birdie” since school resumed in January.
“Bye Bye Birdie” was originally a Broadway play with many film and play adaptations.
“It’s about Conrad Birdie, a character similar to Elvis and his producer Albert,” senior Sarah King said, who potrays teenage chorus girl Margie. “And it is also about the drama created when he [Conrad Birdie] visits a typical American town in the ‘50s.”
The cast practices everyday during second block along with additional rehearsals after school, including dress rehearsals from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 2:00 Sunday where the cast dresses in full costume and runs full performances of the play.
“It’s been hard work.” senior Jordon Miller said, who depicts the youngest member of the McAfee family, Randolf. “It’s something big to do before I graduate.”
Leading roles include Austin Wadley, producer of Conrad Birdie, Albert; Albert’s secretary, Ashley Park; Conrad Birdie, Levi Brady and 15 year-old Kim McAfee, Suzanne Atwell.
Performances are the week of April 8 through April 12 during second block. Freshmen will attend Monday, juniors Wednesday, seniors Thursday and sophomores Friday. Tickets are on sale for $3. All proceeds go towards stage management and expenses.
