After attending a conference over the summer, Spanish teacher Kathryn Maus applied for a class set of iPads from the Dawson Education Co-op. She received the iPads and will have them for at least two weeks, just long enough for her students to complete their latest project.
“What they’re doing right now is writing stories using apps,” Maus said. “They are writing stories and some groups are recording their stories.”
The students are divided into small groups to create the stories. They may use apps, such as Puppet Pals, or draw their story and scan it onto the computer. Some groups draw their stories by hand, but use the iPads to search words on a Spanish dictionary app and find images on Google.
“Our group is doing a story about someone who is poor,” sophomore Angel Shearer said. “We mainly use the iPads to look up words and look for pictures.”
No matter how the groups create their stories , they will present their stories Friday, Nov. 16 and Monday, Nov. 19.
“At least every one will get the chance to interact with the [Promethean] board. That’s the goal,” Maus said.
Maus said she already uses an iPad to teach her class, so she decided to sign up for the class set.
“I wanted to try something different because everyone gets bored doing the same thing,” Maus said. “It was a way to incorporate technology in the classroom.”
She said her favorite app on the iPad is the dropbox, which allows users to share files between several electronic devices.
“It’s like the big flash drive in the sky,” Maus said.
