Arkansas Comic Con returned to Little Rock Sept. 12-14, drawing thousands of fans, vendors and special guests for the state’s largest pop culture convention. What started as a small gathering of comic and movie lovers has grown into one of Arkansas’s popular annual events of the year.
For many, Comic Con is less about the costumes and merchandise but more about the sense of belonging it creates. Sophomore Teaunna Johnson enjoys that Comic Con provides a welcoming space for fans to be themselves.
“It’s like a judgement free zone, you can dress up, you can buy stuff. It’s just a whole bunch of nerdy stuff that you can do. It’s amazing.” Johnson said.
Popular amongst Comic Con attendees is also their cosplay contests. Fans are given the opportunity to compete and share design ideas. Sophomore Genesis Saldana explained the excitement of participating.
“A bunch of people gather around, and then sometimes you get compliments from other cosplayers. You also get a little shining moment, because you’re on stage for a couple of seconds,” Saldana said.
For first-time fans, Comic Con offers a welcoming environment that makes diving into the experience less intimidating. Senior Natetiana Sledge found that, even though it was nerve-racking, it turned out to be something she really enjoyed.
“Honestly, I loved it. Everybody was very nice and welcoming,” Sledge said.
Although the costumes and contests are the main attraction, many attendees say the connections they make are what keep them coming back year after year. They often create bonds that last even after the event ends.
“You meet the best people ever. It’s just so wonderful and joyous.” Saldana said. “There are so many good people in the mix and genuinely you can find really long term friendships there.”
