“A Minecraft Movie” directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Mamoa, Jack Black and Sebastian Hanson released on April 4. On opening weekend, the movie grossed $163 million, and is still racking up money weeks past its release. However, the money isn’t the movie’s concern.
Due to internet memes from Jack Black’s delivery of the line “Chicken jockey” fans have raged in theaters, throwing popcorn at each other and spilling drinks on others for no apparent reason. The distributions can be seen here, as they get more severe.
This outrage has been a meme on the internet for years. Similar scenarios have been seen for movies such as Sony’s “Morbius” and Illuminations “Minions 2: Rise of Gru,” where fans threw banana peels at the screen.
These reactions have gotten so out of hand that cinema workers have had to personally kick people out, pause the movie to scold them and even get the police involved. Jared Hess in a Variety interview said, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called.” One fan in particular brought a live chicken into the theater, only to abandon it immediately after the movie was over.
The trend has made its way around the country, even in the natural state of Arkansas. “As the infamous Chicken Jockey scene came closer, the people went crazy, people below threw popcorn on each other and the floor, similar to how it would look in a romcom when the movie has an excellent finish. Later on the culprits were removed from the theatre, after the movie me and a friend even offered our help to the workers cleaning up the mess,” said Sophomore Tatum Turley.
The situation got so out of hand that theaters have started to put warnings before the movie, asking the audience to not react immaturely to the infamous scene. Another showing had movie star Jack Black come to the theater and personally ask to not ruin the theater. “No Chicken Jockey!” Black said in the video.
