Popular Christian rock band Skillet played Simmons Bank Arena on Friday, March 14. The band consists of lead vocalist and bass guitarist John Cooper, drummer and co-lead vocalist Jen Ledger, lead guitarist Korey Cooper and keyboardist and guitarist Seth Morrison.
The band played a ten song setlist including the songs: Showtime, Feel Invincible, Awake and Alive, Ash in the Wind, Nothing but the Blood of Jesus (Robert Lowry cover)(with Colton Dixon), Hero, All that Matters, Unpopular, Monster, and The Resistance.
They began the concert with one of their new songs: Showtime. Showtime was a visual effects-heavy performance. During the song, lights flashed chaotically and cannons blasted during specific notes in the song. The crowd sang along and jumped up in the air while waving their hands in the air, sporting a signature hand signal that the band itself adopted as a symbol of the Christian aspect that they value.
Their performance at the concert was lively and impressive. The songs they played had a loud, metal theme to them and the fire and cannons that were added as special effects made the liveliness even more exemplified.
John Cooper would often jump up and down and aggressively strum the guitar, head banging as he sang the loud music. Closer to the end of the concert, Ledger and Morrison stood on platforms that rose slowly into the air, which contributed to the thrilling experience. The Coopers together were a duo of headbanging and aggressive guitar playing.
Over more than two decades, since their formation in 1996 in Memphis, Tennessee, Skillet has become one of the most influential Christian rock bands. They’ve been awarded Grammy nominations, dove awards, billboard music awards and RIAA certifications.
Their music has been used as themes at major WWE events. One of their tracks, “Awake and Alive,” was featured on the soundtrack for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”
The band chose the name Skillet to represent the idea of ‘mixing’ various musical influences, much like ingredients in a skillet.
