2016 VMAs: The Fashion Woos and Boos
The MTV Video Music Awards provides insight into the latest fashion trends in modern culture. Many people often overlook the nuances in fashion celebrities bring to the event. From Britney Spears to Kanye West to Troye Sivan, new fashion statements dominated New York City. Whether these statements were good or not is my decision. I will not cover everyone who showed up–I’m only human, and not everybody is interesting enough to critique–so I’ll just get to the good stuff.
I have to start with my boy, Kanye West. This dude can dress down or dress up, and he will still be dope. West, better known as Yeezus, arrived in a monochromatic urban getup. I don’t know anyone else who can pull off a plain white t-shirt and still look bomb. Kanye knows the basics, and he chose to embrace them. Mr. West, I salute you. Style score: There is a reason why he calls himself a god.
Whereas Kanye embraces the classics, his wife is willing to break some barriers. Kim Kardashian takes risks with her image. For some, her look might be too much, but for me, let’s just say my marshmallow is well-roasted. Kardashian-West wore a little black dress with her right sleeve rolled halfway down to her elbow. Talk about sexy. Also, the “shower hair” and “no brassiere” look is in, and Kardashian-West knows how to rock it. Just a bomb look, and a bomb woman. Style score: My words can’t do her justice.
I love Will Smith. I think he was great in the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and looked fantastic in “Suicide Squad”. He has a beautiful family, but his son Jaden looks like a handful. Jaden popped up at this gig looking like he came from the urban streets of Scotland. Seriously, this guy rocked a kilt, a blazer, black denim and canvas sneakers: all the aspects of nighttime clubbing with an ethnic touch. His hair is what gets me. Look, I’m all for the dreadlock look –they look phenomenal on a lot of people –but Jaden was not able to pull it off here. His hair is a total turn-off, and his outfit makes me want to look the other way. If I were talking with Jaden right now and he was rambling about some deep or controversial matter, chances are that I would not take him seriously and laugh in his face. Style score: He ain’t no fresh prince like his father.
He captivated cinemas everywhere with his handsome features and smooth way with words in “The Fault in Our Stars”. He was the brother we wished to have in “Divergent”. This man is Ansel Elgort. As majestic as he may appear in these motion pictures, I would say the opposite for his appearance at Madison Square Garden. No one told poor Elgort that Halloween is at the end of next month. This guy looked like a middle school gothic boy playing dress up as Edward Scissorhands. Elgort wore all black, and on top of that, he covered himself in chains. Sleeves, legs, shoes, heart and soul, you name it. Let Johnny Depp portray the lovable Tim Burton character, and Depp only. Elgort, you’re a bit too early to the party, my friend. Better luck next year, if you’re still relevant. Style score: There is a fault in this star.
No fashion critique would be complete without covering the queen herself, Beyonce. Every time I look at her, I become speechless. God truly sent an angel to Earth, because that is what Beyonce looked like. She is wore a transparent white dress, decorated with Heaven’s feathers around the shoulders, which extended enough to give her caramel skin a gentle hug. It was such a dazzling dress that I almost didn’t want to look at it, because I felt inferior to her. Who am I to lay my eyes on such a goddess? Style score: Enough to make me drunk in love with her.
The VMAs really amazed me. There were many people I learned from, and many people I laughed at. Higher fashion and culture had a fantastic year at the VMAs, but also a horrible one in some aspects. May God have tender mercy on those who looked ridiculous –yes, I’m talking about you, Farrah Abraham. You’re not Wonder Woman. America, keep on being beautiful.
