While readers often argue that books are nearly always better than their movie counterparts, most book lovers cannot wait to run to the theater as soon as their favorite story hits the big screen. However, there are times when the movie does not do the book justice. Luckily for anyone who has fallen in love with “The Mortal Instruments” series and was disappointed in the movie, there is a television series that will be focusing on the series called “Shadowhunters,” premiering on ABC Family Jan. 12, 2016.

“The Mortal Instruments” began as a young adult series that many teens raved about. On Aug. 21, 2013 the first movie adaptation, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” was released in theaters. It received a poor response from the audience compared to the strong following the series held.

“[The movie] did not do the book justice,” sophomore Zoie Glass said. “The characters [were] portrayed well and the actors did a good job of portraying the characters, but the way they were described in the book is not how they looked in the movies, and they left out some really important parts.”

While the movie was not accurate in portraying the events of the book, readers still tried to look at the movie without strictly comparing it to the book.

“I don’t like how it didn’t match the book very well. It was very different, and the characters weren’t portrayed as well as I thought they could [have been], but it was definitely a movie that I’d watch again,” sophomore Julia Kovarovic said.

In hopes of creating a better version that the readers will prefer, this book series will be hitting television screens rather than theaters. The television series will have stars Katherine McNamara as Cary, the main character in the series. McNamara is known for her roles in the “Maze Runner: Scorch Trials” and “New Year’s Eve.”Dominic Sherwood plays the role of Jace. Like every new movie, readers especially have their own guidelines for this new series.

“Since in the movie they cut out a lot of [parts], I’m hoping that they’ll attach themselves more to the books in the series than they have in the movie,” senior Janny Pavon said. “[The movie] had major plot things, but they didn’t have [scenes] that helped the plot in the movie. I’m hoping that they [add] that in the series.”
