Skins finale gives heartfelt goodbye

by Evan Goodrich.

The “Skins” season 6 finale left me able to say only one word: Wow. What an ending that was. Two episodes have passed since my last review covering the sixth season of E4’s British teen drama “Skins,” and much has happened in that time frame.

The penultimate episode “Mini and Franky,” focused on (you guessed it) characters Mini and Franky running away from their families and friends. Most episodes focusing on two characters tend to lack focus and have trouble balancing the two. But Mini and Frankys’ storylines run so deep and are so perfectly interwoven that this doesn’t become an issue and feels like one solid storyline. However, while much of Mini’s story arc for the season is tied up by the end of the episode, the episode served more as a setup for Franky’s story for the final episode.

The final episode, aptly titled “Finale,” focused on the entire main cast, following the Skins tradition for season finales. However, the episode arguably serves Franky’s character more than the others. Despite this, though, the episodes manages to wrap up everyone’s storylines in perhaps the most beautiful way, offering a solid conclusion to this beloved third generation of Bristolian teens.

While past generations’ final episodes tended to be more open-ended and less conclusive (the second generation’s utter mess of an ending comes to mind), this finale delivered an ending that the characters, as well as longtime “Skins” fans, deserved. The finale focused on change and gave the characters what they’ve wanted since their introduction, and it’s all just really lovely. I will admit that by the end of the episode, I was in manly tears. It was made even worse by the news that this will be the final true season of “Skins,” before its cancellation next year. This show has has changed me for the better, and I will miss it with all my heart.

You can watch all season of “Skins,” including season six episodes, on Hulu.com.
