    MYTH BUSTERS

    TRENDS EDITION

    MYTH 1

    Black is Slimming

A textbook example of a fashion rule, the slimming effect of black is a trick renown throughout various cultures and times.

“Black is a classic color on girls and guys; it’s easy to wear and always looks good,” junior Kameron Kimmons said.

Black actually does slim by masking the shadows cast by any imperfections, which show starkly against lighter colors, such as white. The shadows cast when viewing someone from the front or behind are hidden among the inky material of any little black dress, top, skirt or short.

     MYTH 2

Horizontal Stripes Make You Appear Wider

    BUSTED

Horizontal stripes are said to draw the eyes across the body, creating the façade of a wider frame. Likewise, vertical stripes are said to lengthen and slim by guiding wondering eyes up and down the body rather than across.

However, according to a study preformed by a perception expert at the University of New York, not only do horizontal stripes not widen, they actually slim the area where they’re focused.

     MYTH 3

Clothes Hitting the Upper Ankle or Lower Calf Thicken Legs

Ankle booties, capri’s and A-line skirts are all rumored to give even the leanest legs a thicker, bulkier appearance.

Kim Kardashian served as living proof to the truth of this myth when she sported boyfriend Kanye West’s $6000 shoes, a cream-colored furry hybrid of heels, sandals and leg warmers. While the actress is known for her feminine curves, the furry creations gave her legs a stunted, overly muscular appearance.

     MYTH 4

    Neutrals Clash

    BUSTED

Black, grey, brown and white are all said to clash in a visual fit worthy of the fabled titans. Also accused of being the building blocks of bland outfits, brown and black especially are targets of malice among the fashionably conscious.

“Mixing black and brown is really unflattering,” senior Emily Dabbs said. “You just don’t do it.”

Incorporating this summers color block trend into fall, models have been spotted rocking color blocked neutrals on the runways. Accessorized with the berry toned heels and jewelry popular this season; a collage of neutrals has become the ideal backdrop for edgy accessories or makeup.
